I'm going to try to watch the game tonight to see what happens (with my luck, it will be one of the few that is not televised at all, on either FSN Florida or Sun Sports).

OK. Since both the Rays and Marlins appear on FSN, will be interesting to see whose announcers do the telecast (i.e. a Marlins telecast or a Rays telecast). I don't care either way, the Marlins guys are kinda lame (the one main play by play guy has a habit of yelling "ballgame!" when the final out is recorded, or when a walk-off winning run is scored (I think only for Marlins victories). Haven't seen enough of the Rays telecasts to form an opinion on their announcers. At least the Rays show some of their games on broadcast TV. Marlins, it's either FSN or Sun Sports, so you don't have cable or satellite, you don't get to see the Marlins on TV, except for those one or two games a year they appear on FOX. At one point they were on this independent station, WAMI (ch. 69, heh), but it converted to espaņol a few years ago and that was the end of that.

Not sure, but I'll guess the home team announcers take the mic.

If the Rays lose tonight, Yankees take first. Rays may even be in a tie for second with the Red Sox before the weekend is over.

LOL. Marlins just retired the side. Every time they get an out, the fans blow the horns. I don't have a problem with it. Baseball is very boring to the casual fan.

First 15,000 fans get a horn. Looks like they barely got that many fans tonight, and it's supposed to be a big rivalry.

Floridians are too laid back to go anywhere.

I think it was the most exciting game yet in the WC. Our defense sucked in the first half but we were otherwise playing well. We scored three (YES, THREE) on the vaunted Slovenian defense.
We belong. I hope we don't choke against Algeria. A win and we're in.
I hope England ties or loses and is eliminated. If that happens we can advance with a tie in the next game (which will be played at the same time).

Did you see the American fan crying when the US tied?

That is true. The way I knew it was that the third tie-breaker was the head-to-head (a tie in this case) and the fourth was disciplinarty points for yellow, red cards (the less the better). If everything is still tied then it's a coin-toss.
I need to look it up. Anything can still happen in this group. Even Algeria can still advance if they beat the US and England fails to win.
The US can finish anywhere from first to last. It's crazy
(and naysayers insist that ties aren't exciting).

I just looked it up on the FIFA World Cup site.
They don't use Fair Play points as a tiebreaker. If all is statistically tied (they tie 2-2 and we tie 0-0), and since the head-to-head was also a tie, there will be a drawing of lots.

In baseball, you play until you win. Even if it takes 8 hours and 26 innings.

That doesn't change the conundrum of what happens when teams are tied in the standings after 3 games. Having just winners and losers in group play statistically INCREASES the chances of ties in standings after so few games because you are taking out the possibility of less points for a tie (which is still one more than for a loss) and the variables that come with the possibility of three different on-the-field results (win, tie or loss) instead of just two (win or loss).
Do you know what the 2006 World Baseball Classic's rules for tiebreakers was if two or more teams are tied in the standings? That is the question being presented here. They used the same round robin group-play format as the WC in the early rounds.

Anyway here's the answer:

From Wikipedia:

In Round 1 and 2, ties shall be broken in the following order of priority:
1. The winner of head-to-head games between the tied teams;
2. The team allowing the fewest runs per nine innings (RA/9) in head-to-head games between the tied teams;
3. The team allowing the fewest earned runs per nine innings (ERA) in head-to-head games between the tied teams;
4. The team with the highest highest batting average (AVG) in head-to-head games between the tied teams;
5. Drawing of lots, conducted by WBCI.

Look familiar?

This is true, although as someone who has been in that stadium, it's a huge stadium. I saw football there, but I can imagine that you would be lost in there in a baseball game. That said, it's empty even for a baseball game, that fact exaggerated even worse than it already is, by the huge size of that stadium.

But it has the stereotype (which has truth to it) that it's mostly immigrants that like "futbol" in this country. First generation immigrants are into it like they were in their home country. It's still somewhat liked by the second generation immigrants, and is all but lost on third generation. Usually.

Yup. I remember going to games at Metropolitan Oval. Most of the adults spoke Italian or German, or Yugoslavian(in later years).

When I was a little kid, my best friend (from a country in the former Yugoslavia) used to play soccer there, but also at the other soccer field off Metropolitan in Maspeth. I think that field is still there too. His father (1st generation) was a rabid soccer fan. My friend liked it too, but not quite as fanatical as his father, it was already lost quite a bit by then.
In this country it's become sort of a kid's game. Lots of kids play it. Adults, not so much (unless you are not born here).

Those places and languages are a mystery. Croatian, Serbian, who the hell knows? I'm watching the world cup and not only do Slovakia and Slovenia exist, they are evidently two completely different countries!?! Could not whichever one came second have chosen a more original name!

Turn on Coast To Coast. They are talking about how they fixed the NBA Finals, and the World Cup.

Germans call it fusball (but they use that weird "B" looking letter instead of an "s").
