I remember going to games at Metropolitan Oval. Most of the adults spoke Italian or German, or Yugoslavian(in later years).When I was a little kid, my best friend (from a country in the former Yugoslavia) used to play soccer there, but also at the other soccer field off Metropolitan in Maspeth. I think that field is still there too. His father (1st generation) was a rabid soccer fan. My friend liked it too, but not quite as fanatical as his father, it was already lost quite a bit by then. In this country it's become sort of a kid's game. Lots of kids play it. Adults, not so much (unless you are not born here). |
