You may have very sensitive taste buds, but then I could counter by saying all you've ever been exposed to are items high in sodium content, but before you jump the gun why don't you wait to see what the regulations will be. You're quick to say this is governmental overstepping their boundaries but do you or I for that matter know exactly what they will target or what the levels of salt will have to be? Also you forget the fact that the FDA originally asked for food companies to voluntarily cut sodium but they didn't even flinch.

They already do that. Smoking rates have plummeted in the last few decades.

I am not the one that said there is some "problem" with smoking or drinking that needs to be addressed, Jay Zee brought that up.

VFW posts are going down the same route.

Have you ever been to a VFW post? It's usually a bunch of old men sitting at the bar. What younger people are going to want to hang out there? By the way, it's still legal to smoke in VFW Hall bars....as it's considered a "private" club.

I am not crazy about any of Trader Joe's fresh vegetables or fruits there. I like their frozen pre-prepared foods, as well as their frozen vegetables.
I can't eat canned vegetables or fruits at all, I don't like them soft, and I feel they have no taste. The only canned vegetables I can eat is peas or corn. I only really eat fresh or frozen vegetables.
I guess I can handle canned pineapple, but I much rather have that fresh too.

I don't like veggie pizza, but I do like bean quesadilla. Are you a vegetarian? It seems like everything you mention excluded meat. "Not that there's anything wrong with that"... :)

I prefer fresh or frozen, but there is no problem with salt free canned veggies.

As I mentioned in the other post, I can't eat canned vegetables. And it's not because of the "salt", it's that I don't like the taste of vegetables when they are "soft" or "overcooked", as most canned vegetables are. I too really only eat fresh or frozen vegetables.

1.) Food that needs to be cooked with salt isn't going to be affected by this. Ham will still be available. Same with pickled foods. Same with baked goods. These foods aren't the target of this. It's the processed stuff, the gobs of salt needlessly added to some soups, processed and frozen foods which would be perfectly fine with half or less than is currently used.

2.) Done gradually, people will NEVER know the difference. You included. Salt is tasted through the tongue, NOT the sinus like most foods. Because of this difference, it is sensed differently in the brain. After an adjustment period (a few weeks for most) your brain recognizes a different threshold level of saltiness, sweetness, sourness or bitterness IF you consistently adjust the level of intake over the few weeks of adjustment. I'm tired of telling you this. You are completely mistaken here. You will never know the levels are altered if done ove r along period of time like has been proposed.

3.) I think the NYC proposal is nuts.

4.) Nor do you hold the answers to what will happen in the future, stop speculating. You are really being idiotic and are getting really tiring about this. If you want to talk abou tit, you have to listen as well.

Actually I can't stand the taste of any Cream of Chicken soups other than the Cambpell's regular version. What is the shelf life of those cans - if this ban passes I will have to buy 100 or more cases to store in my cellar so that I can continue to enjoy a good tasting product.

You have no idea how picky I am - I can detect even slight variations of taste between brands. For example, I can tell the difference between the different brands of frozen corn even if they claim to have no added ingredients or sauces.

I also remember the taste of products I like quite vividly even after almost half a century. For example the ONLY toothpaste I EVER liked was IPANA. Even 40+ years after it was discontinued I have not been able to find a satisfactory substitute. I change brands every time I go shopping hoping to find one - no luck!

Once again, we have the right making much ado about little.

The NYTimes essentially debunked the Wash Post story cited above. A Congressionally-appointed panel "recommended" that the FDA look into ways of reducing salt -- that's all.

"The report, commissioned by Congress to evaluate strategies for reducing sodium intake, recommended that the F.D.A. use its regulatory powers to declare that sodium above a certain level is unsafe, which could eventually bar companies from selling foods containing elevated levels of salt.

But because people’s palates are used to today’s salty foods, the report said, the agency should order gradual reductions over time, to eventually reach healthier levels once tastes and preferences have adjusted."

The FDA said the Wash Post story was hooey:

"The agency said that a report on Tuesday in The Washington Post gave a “mistaken impression” that it was already moving to set limits on sodium. The F.D.A said the Department of Health and Human Services would create an interagency working group to consider what steps to take in trimming salt from food.
F.D.A. Is Urged to Set Limits for Levels of Salt in FoodThe Grocery Manufacturers Association, which represents companies that make packaged food, said it would cooperate with the F.D.A. in its salt reduction efforts."
