Actually, I take back what I said about Suffolk too, I am thinking of the four post offices in the surrounding towns to me, and one of them, in a Downtown, only has street parking, no parking lot (although there is a municipal lot a block away for Downtown parking.
The post office was built in the 1910's, so to answer Easy's question, "that" is probably what they were thinking....cars weren't a real issue back then, and that is probably true of some other "suburban" post offices we have in Nassau and Suffolk without parking.

The post offices back near Scranton where I grew up had parking, though some had more than others.

This is the one they call "the main post office" and it has tons of parking.

The parking lot on the left is for McDonald's. They even put up a sign inside that the parking lot is for McDonald's customers only. They could have built the thing at street level instead of having the stupid steps and then done what that medical center to the right has.

Which ones do you consider old-fashioned? I consider old-fashioned to be like cigarette machines, which I'm guessing you're too young to remember. The ones where you have a handle and pull the handle below your selection.

For the last 15 years I've used the ones kind of like a candy machine where you enter "C", "1" and then the quantity. Those have been getting replaced by fully digital ones that accept only credit cards.

True, but sometimes the postal boundaries don't match up with the political boundaries. To wit zip code 90248, which according to USPS is Gardena, but most of it is located in the city of Los Angeles (the so-called Harbor Gateway strip). Same thing happens where I live, where 3 cities (Hollywood, Miramar and Pembroke Pines) share a zip code. The default goes to Hollywood, since it is the oldest of the 3 (Miramar incorporated 1956, Pembroke Pines in 1960, making it the only city I've ever lived in that was younger than I am).

The fully digital ones are the Automated Postal Machines. The candy machine type ones were useful since they could sell the small denomination stamps during a rate hike. The APM doesn't accept transactions below $1, so one has to buy extra stamps.

I usually go to the regional processing facility near me since it's on my commute back home from work, features APCs, and since it's open until 7 PM, it has the last pick up in the area. Thus, I end up going to drop mail, pick up stamps, and order money orders.

Me too! I go to the regional processing facility in Long Beach because that knocks a day off the delivery schedule. It's on my commute home, but it is over a mile off the freeway.

Yeah, that's bizarre that they would build them in those eras without parking lots.

The "C" "1" type. Those have disappeared from where I used to see them. Though I haven't checked all of the places around here I used to see them.
