Riverhead has some trashy areas....especially around the railroad station. Ironically, the Railroad Museum of LI is across the street from a major hangout for local day-laborers. Sadly, it attracts local bums and vagrants both Mexican and Gringo. |

Much of it was really bad in the 70's when I lived there. It got even worse in the 80's. They had a really high crime rate. Much higher than California, although they never had the super high murder rates like we had out this way.I visited several times over the years. A little I guess, but the perception on this forum by many is that places like Paterson are dangerous and that places like Tampa are not. Paterson was just described as dangerous and it's only slightly above the national average. It's hardly comparable to places like Oakland, Newark, etc. |

National average in crime stats can be misleading because of actual distributions of crime.I've been to Paterson a few times, the area between the station and the courthouse, and I would describe it as hardly a nice place. It was really one of the worse off areas that I encountered. Been to Tampa twice when much younger, and I don't recall much at all. Newark isn't great, but I have been to very different areas within it that it makes a huge difference; still, most of Newark isn't exactly the idealized paradigm of 1950s Americana. I wouldn't call any of the foregoing 'dangerous', but neither would I feel fine about taking a stroll after dark. Nor in all candor would I choose to live in any of these areas. |
