The nearest Wetsons was either at Woodhaven and Queens Blvdsor was it at Woodhaven and Rockaway Blvds? I'm not sure because it was a long time ago. The only burger place I remember from that time was Burger n' Shake at Queens Blvd and 58 Street. As far as finding "stuff" in your burger, That had to be Yankee Burger at Astoria Blvd and 21 Street. Urban myth said anything from dope to plastic bags on the buns. |

Hey Karl, I might have even met him once.I remember for either my eighth or ninth birthday, I bought a Marklin Railbus (unpowered)for about $10. It was cheap because it was a display model from a layout. They were willing to sell display models at heavily discounted prices if you asked. I couldn't afford to get a brand new one as it was at least twice the price, but when the salesman told me and my mom that he can give me the one sitting in the layout for half price, I grabbed it. It was in perfect condition and they even got me the original railbus box to put it in. And I still have it! I can understand celebrities buying Marklin models. Even in the 70's, $300 for a good quality locomotive was pricey. Not too many 'average' people bought trains there. But they were great to look at. |

My dad worked there from 1950-58, so it may have been before your time.I even got to work there, but for only one day. I visited my dad one Saturday in Oct 1951, I was only 15 at the time. The Lionel Layout Demonstrator was out sick, and the store VP asked me if I could run the layout for the day. It was the thrill of a lifetime. |

They would also play the same movie at 1, 3 and 5 pm on saturdays and sundays! Around early 1964, they had an Abbott and Costello festival with a different film each weekday night and a different film at the 1,3,5 slots on the weekend!The theme from Gone with the Wind would play and the logo was an open cuecard with 'Million Dollar Movie" written on it. It reminds me of the Early Show at 5 PM with that clock song! |

The Syncopated Clock was written by Leroy Anderson, a light classical composer, back in the mid 1940's. He wrote a lot of music.Syncopated Clock is one of Anderson's best known compositions although I personally like The Typewriter better. The main instrument in this song sounds like an actual typewriter. He passed away more than 30 years ago yet his music lives on. |

I liked the music even then. I didn't know it was the theme from GWTW until a fews later when I actually watched that film for the first time. Before that, it was just the classic WOR movie song. Seeing it now on YouTube after all these years brought back a lot of nostalgia and was sort of moving really. I wish I could find the circa 1976-1980 opening theme from the NY Yankee games on WPIX. THAT would bring a lot of flashbacks. |

Sadly, WPIX does not have any of it's old film archived and it's almost impossible to find the stuff you are looking for.The only WPIX archive material I have seen is a few clips of the Chuck McCann show from the 60's.My interest in WPIX and the Yanks goes back to the 1961 season, the classic Mantle-Maris year.They had a commercial in the intro to the games "Baseball and Ballantine" that was classic.Mel Allen, Red Barber and Phil Rizzuto! Agree with you completely on the WOR Million Dollar movie theme.Hearing that meant a great movie.So true.Sadly, old heads like me are relegated to TCM, a great station, to get any classic pre 1960 film. |

Actually I never saw the entire movie.My parents had an abridgd version of it whith played silent on a movie camera. I think the title was "Safe at First."
