Grand Union went bankrupt 3 times and no longer exists, as we knew it, someone bought the name and it still does live on, albeit a shadow of what was. |

Many a time did I accompany my mom shopping at the Herald Square Gimbels. Living in Crown Heights, it was a one-seat ride on the Q (pre-Chrystie) or D (post-Chrystie) from Prospect Park to 34 St/Herald Square. (though sometimes we'd take the B47 one stop to Empire/Washington if it was coming). My favorite floor in Gimbels was the 6th, which had the toys (when I was younger) and the records (when I was older)(though I got most of my records from A & S on Fulton St (8th floor there). |

Remember the old expression years ago when you were trying to get secret information out of somebody? They would say "Does Macy's tell Gimbels?" Those great old timer New Yorkers! Just like department stores you were loyal to the New York Giants, the New York Yankees or the Brooklyn Dodgers! |

Some other old and not so old NYC stores, etc.EJ Korvettes - Had a great record department in the 1970s. They sold everything at one time, even large appliances. I used to shop at the Bay Parkway location. Korvettes gone by 1980/81. Is that a Kmart now? Martin's - Fine clothes. Located on Fulton Street in Brooklyn. Gone by 1981. Crazy Eddie - I remember his first little store on Kings Highway. For a guy who always had a bad reputation he did well for a long time until the law caught up with him. Newmark & Lewis - Not a bad place to buy TVs and VCRs but like most regional electronic chains coudln't compete with the big box outfits like Best Buy. Lafayette Radio - Based in Long Island. The Brooklyn store was in a crummy location on Bedford Avenue near Snyder(?) Avenue. Lafayette brand stuff lasted forever. I use Lafayette 2X speakers in my basement. Around 1982 Circuit City bought them out and closed the NYC area stores. Circuit City itself is now history. Trader Horn - Another electronic chain, entered the NYC market around 1984. Out of business around 1995. Orange Julius - Are they gone too? IIRC they were only in Manhattan. A hot dog and hamburger place like Nedicks. LH Martin - Discount stores, poorly run. Cheap merchandise. Gone around 1981. They had a location on Newkirk Avenue near the Brighton line. TSS Stores - Another cheapo discount place, also gone in early 1980s. Any others????????? |

They had an outlet in the Bronx we would go to in the 1950's.They also had a store in Paramus NJ with a bizarre mural on the outside which is in storage. That store is long gone.EJ Korvette record department was fabulous. The branch in Paramus NJ is where I shopped. The rEcords all had a code as to price A,B,C and so on.I bought a suit in 1971 there for only 30 bucks complete with a tailor there altering it! Lafayette radio had a branch in Paramus NJ as well. That was the place in the late 50's- mid 60's for electronics. My father bought a Heathkit amp there. Trader Horn had a branch here also.I bought a few things from them that never broke down. |

Alexander's was one of the anchors of the Kings Plaza Mall.Whoever the buyer was for Korvette's record department in the mid-1970s must have been a big WNEW-FM fan. They stocked nearly everything I heard on that great album-oriented radio station, even obscure UK imports by groups like Pilot, Pretty Things, The Move, Wizzard, ELO (before they got big) and Nektar. Out of character with the rest of Korvettes which sold just plain stuff. You could buy 10W-40 motor oil then go upsatirs and pick up the latest offbeat UK import LP. |

Pretty soon we'll be talking about Fortunoff's in this thread.Does anyone remember Great Eastern in Elmont? It used to be where the Home Depot on Hempstead Turnpike is now. They were kind of like Woolworth's on steroids. The store was huge, they had everything and there was a Hills supermarket attached to it. They were a chain, IIRC. I've tried to find pictures but there doesn't seem to be anything out there. In the early 1970's a trip with my parents to Great Eastern usually ended with us stopping at Gouz (rhymes with cows) on Dutch Broadway. |
