I guess they should use the alloys then...And ALL metals are "flammable"...just need the right stuff around them to cause a hot reaction, which we percieve as burning... The ehat packs are made of iron filings and water(with salt?), when you break the seal in between the two, you mix them, and the iron filings quickly oxidize...producing heat... Make the filings small enough, and it might burn... Thermite reactions are based on the oxidation of aluminum mixed with oxidized iron... |

Also, what do you mean by "brittle"? Is it like cast iron? Don't they use tungsten to cut through rocks using TBMs?? Or is that an alloy?Generally speakin though, brittle materials tend to be HARD materials...So brittleness might be good for TBMs. |

Heat is the by-product of burning. It can also be used to cause things to burn by letting other substances reach activation energy for burning...Sometimes, mixing two things together can create explosions, without adding heat. |

You used to be everything, didn't you?No, JayZee's not correct. "Heat" is very relative to the material when it comes to ignition. And not all heat results in fire, but heat results from firewhich a firefighter ought to be able to tell us, since it's their job (and a noble job indeed) to deal with the effect instead of the cause. The fire triangle must be complete or there can be no fire. As for titanium, it can act as an oxidizer, and release 02, when burning.Elements and compounds with low flash points still need some heat to get them going...and to continue burning. If we put water on the fire, we take away heat, if we smother the fire, we take away oxygen, or if we take away the fuel (whether that be liquid, gas or solid)the fire will go out. Even "cold fire" isn't really cold, you know... |

The 02 is trapped in the metal until released during combustion. The term "oxidizer" means the 02 is in the fuel. Oxygen is used to make steel.Ordinary paper, for example, is always burning because the oxygen in our air "oxidizes" it...over long periods of time, paper will turn yellow, then brown, just like it does when you light it with a match. |
