Posted by JayZeeBMT on Tue Mar 10 19:18:44 2009 OK, this one has me honked off: Former New Jersey legislator Neil Cohen (D-Roselle), who resigned and was subsequently arrested after child-porn was discovered in his office computer, has been allowed to remain free without bail pending trial. This is shocking to me, not least because if I, or any other ordinary person, were caught with child-porn, we'd get a one-way trip, no bail, to the Daily Beatdown Wing of Rikers' Island (or comparable torture chamber). Here, Cohen, an accused pedophile--who actually wrote and sponsored anti-pedophilia legislation, to boot!--gets to walk free? What is going on here?Story from South Jersey's Courier-Post: TRENTON - A former New Jersey lawmaker has pleaded not guilty to child pornography charges. Prosecutors say Neil Cohen has admitted viewing child porn, but rejected a plea bargain. A judge says Cohen can remain free without bail. His freedom comes with conditions. Cohen is not allowed to be around schools or playgrounds, use the Internet other than for business or have unsupervised contact with children under 16. The former assemblyman from Roselle faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted of official misconduct and child pornography charges. Authorities say the Democrat used the computer in his local legislative office to view, print and duplicate images of underage girls engaged in sexual acts. |

Kiddie-porn laws are enforced the way they are for two main reasons:1) Somewhere along the line, a child had to be molested or exploited to produce the images in the first place, and 2) Pedophiles caught producing or possessing kiddie porn are often doing much worse than that. Charging them with kiddie porn gives investigators a tool to discover what else, if anything, the suspect was up to, which cumulatively makes kids safer. I do, however agree with those who say the rights of those accused of possessing kiddie-porn are often trampled, because of the nature of the charges involved. These defendants are presumed guilty until proven innocent (which rarely, if ever happens)... |

I agree that molesting a child should be punished harshly. Possessing a photo of said crime should not be punished as hard. We don't execute people for having photos of people murdering others. |

If porn doesn't cause rape (or so say dozens of studies), then kiddy porn doesn't cause child abuse.I also want to make it clear that I do not support legalizing kiddie porn. It should be a low-level crime punished with community service and public shame. |

I don't think anyone in their right mind supports legalizing kiddie porn. But you'll never, ever, in this life, see kiddie porn downgraded from a serious felony. No politician who wants to get elected or re-elected would even think of doing that. |

It seems harsh to give someone 30 years for viewing the stuff,when in Austria they charge you a $1000 fee for participating in the brutal gang stuff of minors. by rapefugees. $1000 fee to do it 30 years to watch it on a little screen.
