Paul Krugman retiring from New York Beobachter Slimes

Huffington Puffington Post

Legendary New York Times Columnist Announces Retirement

After nearly 25 years as a New York Times Opinion columnist, Paul Krugman announced Friday that he plans to retire from the gig at the end of the year.

The American economist and Nobel laureate has been a fixture at the paper since his first column on Jan. 2, 2000, where he predicted the beginning of the “Second Global Economy” steered by American ideals and the promise of globalization.

Times’ Opinion editor Kathleen Kingsbury hailed Krugman’s “authoritative voice” and “lively writing” in a parting memo, praising his ability to clearly lead readers through what can often be a dense thicket of economic ideas.

Kingsbury also applauded Krugman for speaking “hard truths ― sometimes as a lonely voice arguing unfashionable opinions.”

That includes his strong opposition to the American invasion of Iraq (and countless other George W. Bush-era policies), Barack Obama’s handling of the Great Recession, and, of course, Donald Trump’s alarming infatuation with tariffs.

Kingsbury said his final column ― as yet unwritten ― will be authored soon.

Krugman won a Nobel prize in 2008 for his analysis of economies of scale and their impacts on world trade.

The Times’ Opinion audience director, Liriel Higa, said she admired how approachable Krugman is with his readers.

“Despite being a Nobel winner, Paul was incredibly accessible,” Higa wrote in the memo. “He responded to readers in comments on his articles; he touted the benefits of air fryers in an Opinion TikTok; he loved his cats.”

With seemingly everyone retiring early these days - 55 is the new 65 - it's remarkable that he kept going until 71.

It's not remarkable.

He was a professional, not some hourly, who had some level of celebrity.

Everyone?

I hear of nobody retiring at 55. Only in your bubble do you hear such things. And Krugman didn't have a very hard job anyway.

As an actuary, I would tend to agree that there are relatively few retirements at 55. The trend really mostly starts at 60, with big bumps at ages 62 (first availability of Social Security) and 65 (Medicare).

My last contract at MN let us retire at 60 with full pension (RRT and MN pensions) if you had 30 years of service. When I turned 60 I had 38 years of service with full medical benefits until 65 when Medicare and AARP Medicare advantage plans kicked in. I was able to get a part time job for a few extra bucks and frankly give me something to do.
When youve been working all your life and suddenly stop, it could have an effect on your physical and mental health.
When you finally pull the pin, be prepared for some changes to say the least.

I should say that my experience is with private companies. Public employees often can retire earlier with full pensions.

My observations are more anecdotal, but as someone who works nonstandard hours I often see many men (less often women) who appear to be in their 50's and who are out and about during normal business hours. Of course some may work odd hours like me, or my age guesses may be off in some cases, but I completely believe there are a lot of young retirees.

There are also flexible work hours.

I work about 8 hours during the time period 8 to 5:30. That gives me 1.5 hours a day to be out and about during normal business hours. So I may look retired even though I'm not.

That aunt of mine who’s still working has been with the Feds since 1998 on a part time basis. And even back then a lot of her work was from home. Occasionally going out to do surveys. That sounds pretty good to me.

His pension, very generous both in terms of starting age and dollar amount (not my assertion; he's said so himself) is funded by NYC taxpayers.

I'm not suggesting that he doesn't deserve it.

???

NYC law enforcement pensions are very heavily funded by the taxpayers. The participant contribution portion is significantly less.

There's nothing wrong with this - it's part of employee compensation. But that's how it is.

Good for you!! I've been working since I was 13. At that time, my father got to me and said "son, count to ten" That I did. Then he says "good, you can count, now go out and make money". That started my full and part time participation in the working class (school permitting) until I turned 60. It was a big adjustment not working and getting paid for it. Thankfully I had an understanding wife that I didn't drive crazy.

It has to be a public entity.* ERISA generally doesn't permit private companies from providing pensions at ages younger than 55. And you sure weren't working for Nassau County.

* Sure it could conceivably be a multiemployer pension plan, but that's not really plausible.
