Everyone?I hear of nobody retiring at 55. Only in your bubble do you hear such things. And Krugman didn't have a very hard job anyway. |

As an actuary, I would tend to agree that there are relatively few retirements at 55. The trend really mostly starts at 60, with big bumps at ages 62 (first availability of Social Security) and 65 (Medicare). |

My last contract at MN let us retire at 60 with full pension (RRT and MN pensions) if you had 30 years of service. When I turned 60 I had 38 years of service with full medical benefits until 65 when Medicare and AARP Medicare advantage plans kicked in. I was able to get a part time job for a few extra bucks and frankly give me something to do.When youve been working all your life and suddenly stop, it could have an effect on your physical and mental health. When you finally pull the pin, be prepared for some changes to say the least. |

My observations are more anecdotal, but as someone who works nonstandard hours I often see many men (less often women) who appear to be in their 50's and who are out and about during normal business hours. Of course some may work odd hours like me, or my age guesses may be off in some cases, but I completely believe there are a lot of young retirees. |

There are also flexible work hours.I work about 8 hours during the time period 8 to 5:30. That gives me 1.5 hours a day to be out and about during normal business hours. So I may look retired even though I'm not. |

That aunt of mine who’s still working has been with the Feds since 1998 on a part time basis. And even back then a lot of her work was from home. Occasionally going out to do surveys. That sounds pretty good to me. |

His pension, very generous both in terms of starting age and dollar amount (not my assertion; he's said so himself) is funded by NYC taxpayers.I'm not suggesting that he doesn't deserve it. |

The participant contribution portion is significantly less. There's nothing wrong with this - it's part of employee compensation. But that's how it is. |

I've been working since I was 13. At that time, my father got to me and said "son, count to ten" That I did. Then he says "good, you can count, now go out and make money". That started my full and part time participation in the working class (school permitting) until I turned 60. It was a big adjustment not working and getting paid for it. Thankfully I had an understanding wife that I didn't drive crazy. |

It has to be a public entity.* ERISA generally doesn't permit private companies from providing pensions at ages younger than 55. And you sure weren't working for Nassau County.* Sure it could conceivably be a multiemployer pension plan, but that's not really plausible. |
