What more could they have done?

With far more massive resources, they probably would have secured every square inch of the entire golf course hours in advance.

But that would be totally out of proportion to the policy to date for protecting candidates.

I don’t know what their rules of engagement are, but it makes sense to only have to patrol a smaller cordon, so that they only secure the area where the charge is or is about to be. Which is exactly what they did.

It’s also possible that this golf outing was planned at the last minute and that the gunman didn’t know about it, he only camped out on the course on the assumption that Trump would play golf at some point.

I have heard that this was not on his schedule, but at the same time he golfs at every damn opportunity.

They didn't sweep ahead of time because this wasn't on his schedule so they could plan for it, it was a spontaneous trip on his party's part. They're bodyguards, not clairvoyants.

They'd never do that because they'd have to close Ocean Parkway….the road through Palm Beach….as they used to when he was in office and there. We’re talking about a glorified sand bar with a small shopping district at its southern end. The rest is mansion after mansion, his being only one of them.

Speculation. What I'd like to hear is how did the gunman know exactly where to plant himself 12 hours prior and how come the secret service missed that? After all they had all that time to conduct area and grounds sweeps. If that was properly done, how during the prior 12 hours did they miss him?

All a shooter has to do is sit and wait.

Waiting 12 hours for a target is no big deal for a sniper.

The gunman exploited a known security gap. According to the NYT (or maybe it was LAT), news photographers/paparazzi often stake out the perimeter of that course to get photos. They claimed that the gunman could have even gotten to a place that would be much closer to Trump, but likely picked that spot as it's farther and less chance of photographers being there.

The article also claimed that photographers say that they are rarely approached by secret service and even when they are, they aren't asked to leave.

Porcupines are large rodents with coats of sharp spines, or quills, that protect them against predation. The term covers two families of animals: the Old World porcupines of the family Hystricidae, and the New World porcupines of the family Erethizontidae.[1][2] Both families belong to the infraorder Hystricognathi within the profoundly diverse order Rodentia and display superficially similar coats of rigid or semi-rigid quills, which are modified hairs composed of keratin. Despite this, the two groups are distinct from one another and are not closely related to each other within the Hystricognathi. The largest species of porcupine is the third-largest living rodent in the world, after the capybara and beaver.
