Was There Another Attempt on Donald Trump's Life

Posted by Train Dude on Sun Sep 15 19:30:34 2024

From BBC

"after what the FBI says "appears to be an attempted assassination" on the former president at his Florida golf course

A Secret Service agent spotted an AK-47-style weapon poking out of bushes on the golf course about a hole ahead of where Trump was playing, and engaged the suspect

A witness then saw a man flee in a black Nissan, which was later pulled over by a sheriff and the potential suspect was arrested

A weapon, scope, backpacks and GoPro camera were found in shrubs near the edge of the golf course"

This article sheds some light on why I said “duh” (lowercase). Have a look at the photos, because I’m not posting them here.

Would-be Trump assassin exploited security hole that Secret Service has known about for years — and the pictures prove it

The gunman who allegedly staked out former President Donald Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course with an SKS rifle was able to exploit a security hole that the Secret Service has known about for years.

News photographers — including those hired by The Post — have had no problem repeatedly securing spots around the perimeter of the course to snap pictures of Trump playing golf or driving around in a golf cart.

They have even taken images — which require a clear line of sight to the 45th president — unnoticed through the bushes with telephoto lenses. Some have gotten as close as 75 yards — without so much as a sideways glance from the Secret Service.

“They’re always amazed how close they can get to Trump and his entourage — it’s easy for them,” one photo agency source told The Post.

Photographers typically announce themselves to the Secret Service so that they are not mistaken for threats.

Authorities say Ryan Wesley Routh got within 300 to 500 yards of Trump after spending 12 hours in a makeshift sniper nest just outside the fence along Summit Boulevard, a busy thoroughfare of Trump International Golf Club West Palm Beach.

The golf club — which Trump frequents when he is a staying at Mar-a-Lago — is a sprawling, wide-open expanse covering hundreds of acres, lined with dense tropical foliage and tree cover.

The source said photogs can snag pics of Trump “shockingly easily” at his West Palm Beach course, one noting “dozens” of covert gaps in the thick brush around the border.

In areas where there’s no obvious break in the tree line, dedicated snoops can still sneak a view of the course. Some of the lighter flora can simply be pulled apart by hand, easily creating new gaps where just about anyone can watch golfers in action without being seen, the source said.

Even on rare instances when Secret Service agents do see a photographer near the course, they’re rarely questioned, the source said.

The security detail is also exceedingly easy to see approaching on their golf carts, meaning photographers can keep an eye out for them and then hang back and lie low until Trump arrives.

“If they do approach the photographers, sometimes they quickly check their credentials but that’s about it,” the source claims.

The outside of the course is dotted with “No Trespassing” signs, but photographers are easily able to take their pictures from behind those signs, and they’re certainly no deterrent for someone up to no good.

Trump was playing the fifth hole when Secret Service snipers noticed Routh’s gun barrel poking through a chain link fence between the sixth and seventh holes and opened fire on the suspect.

However, the location Routh chose to lie in wait in West Palm Beach wasn’t particularly favorable for photographers, owing to tricky angles and long distances.

“Routh could easily have picked a better spot, but maybe he was worried about being seen by a photographer,” the source added.

The source said it’s even easier to take pictures at the former president’s other Florida golf complex, Trump National Doral, about 77 miles from West Palm Beach.

Doral has four courses, including the famed “Blue Monster,” which is “wide open” for photographers to take pictures.

Routh, 58, fled after being fired upon by Secret Service agents, but was arrested on I-95 in Palm City, about 40 miles north of Trump’s golf course.

He appeared, smiling and wearing shackles on his hands and feet, in a Florida federal court Monday morning as he was hit with felony gun charges.

LOL. Behold, a Google Street View showing easy access to the golf course.

Just walk past the firehouse.

We know the Secret Service has warned Trump that this golf course is hard to secure. It's not the government's job to fortify the place. Trump had 3 choices: take the risk with the place as it is, persuade the golf course to spend a huge amount of money to make it safer, or not play there. He chose the first option.

The shooter was camping out in the golf course for 12 hours. Maybe Trump was going to play a round of golf that day, maybe he wasn't. Trump's schedule of rallies is public. If he had no rallies for today it was quite likely he'd be at Mar-a-Lago.

The Secret Service was doing their job properly as well….the advance people scanned the area near the next hole's tee as his game was advancing and saw the guy….then took shots. As they are supposed to. There is no issue with his security, it obviously worked.

He has gotten additional security at campaign events recently. As a former president, his security is sufficient otherwise.

When a protected is playing golf at an unsecured (most) course, security travels as a bubble around the protectee. They do not (nor should/could they) close down the entire place. These are businesses, many have memberships and they have a right to continue conducting their business. This is SOP for the Secret Service. There's a number of current interviews available of Secret Service agents, current and past, where it’s all explained. Doesn't require any expertise to watch television.

"As a former president, his security is sufficient otherwise."

You are dead wrong. If the secret service had done their job right, these two assassination attempts would have never happened. And If Biden was an effective chief executive, he would get some air time and express to the American people that a call for a complete secret service investigation Is in order. What needs to happen is to find out what was changed/improved as far as security based on what happened in Butler Pa. instead of issuing trite worn out cliches about how there's no place for this type of violence in America, or words to that effect and let it go at that. Thats not good enough, Joe.
One time I'd cut them little slack as to find out what went wrong, learn something and make sure it doesn't happen again. But it did happen again, thankfully without Trump getting another ear pierced this time... or worse. This second incident calls for some answers on why they dropped the ball in letting this knucklehead get that close and heads should roll this time. After all, Trump insist the only target out there.

The second attempt did not happen.

I'm not quibbling here. The golf course has a perimeter of multiple miles. There is no reasonable way that entire golf course can be totally locked down. Unlike in Butler PA, the Secret Service had a reasonable plan here.

A communication problem has been cited in the Butler,PA incident. It is being further investigated and additional steps taken to protect candidates taken. There's not much that can be said until the results of that investigation is made public.

What exactly is your problem about yesterday? This guy, who is NOT currently President, in a private space event, was afforded security that found and resolved a potential threat. Why do you say that isn't enough?

(Go to your chosen news source, or search out secret service protocol for former presidents in private events and youl'l run across someone’s interview about how golfing is handled….for an actual serving President it's roughly the same, augmented)

With the over the top hatred of Trump, presidential level secret service protection is not unreasonable to ask for. There are enough head cases out there that saw how easy the first attempt at taking Trump out was and noticing that Trump escaped death by millimeters that they can say "wow I can do that", based on how close the first gunman got.
My guess is that there will be more attempts.

Nonsense. A head case will not change his mind about shooting Trump.
You think that if Trump calms down or otherwise changes his personality or style, a potential assassin will change his mind and say words to the effect "Ok now I wont kill him "? C'mon!

BTW Its coming out now that the gunman was stalking the golf course for at least 12 hours prior to his capture.
So Where the hell was the secret service?? Why , considering what happened in Butler, wasn't their extra sweeps??
Maybe its better that he don't get an extra secret service detail if this is their form of "protection"

This is no comparison to Butler.

In Butler, they didn't check out stuff a few hundred feet away.

In contrast, the golf course is huge. Not clear how to secure the entire 3 mile or so perimeter and keep it secured without a huge force.

The secret service can’t prosecute thought crime.

Here, they successfully prevented an assassination attempt. Unlike the Pennsylvania attempt, the SS swept the area that Trump was going to be in before he got there and removed the perp successfully, such that Trump was never in danger. What more could they have done?

PA was a major failure; this was a success.
