I would never take a gasoline car on a road trip. I haven't done so in years.

If you want to tool around town in a manual, have at it. But you have to be really special to use one on the open road.

I must revisit this post, it hits a problem I keep noticing.

"I usually bought gas at one of the very busy stations on the Bronx side of the Willis Ave or Third Ave Bridges. I'm sure those locations will have high speed chargers in a few years, if they don't already have them."

Why are you limiting chargers to gas stations? There's electricity everywhere, put them somewhere USEFUL or good.
What are you going to do, stop at a "gas statioN" and then stop at a burger king afterwards? That's dumb.
Break the addicition.

Move on.

???

If you mean a stickshift, they are way easier to drive on the "open road" if you mean a highway without traffic lights or an interstate.

I've been to both coasts just in the last 2 years. It's nice not having to stand around wasting time at a gas pump. Couldn't imagine doing that in a new city or state.

Not enough to charge more than the handful of EVs that are on the road right now, AOC. That'd take a massive upgrade of the grid to the point where it'd start emitting gamma rays.

Why are you arguing about your terribly shitty power grid as though it's something to be proud of? Average transmission line is 52 years old. Demonkkkrats refused to upgrade it to protect against the Iranians.

But you're going to take a page out of the Cuban playbook, and tell us why the grid can't handle too many microwave ovens...I mean cars and how horrible...i mean unrealistic progress is.

Again it's 1941. We're aruging over electricty? And your wattage math is way off. Glad I went to High School for that.

Wow, you sure are a hard lefty on this score. There's no economically viable way to upgrade the grid to fulfill your and Biden's vision of Red Chinese-built EVs everywhere, certainly not without resorting to using our coal and oil resources to generate it and using low-grade Red Chinese steel to build it out of.

What's your scientific background? If we get transmission up to the megawatts in high-voltage transmission lines, it certainly will start emitting ionizing radiation. You can't defy physics.

I'm not interested in the labels form someone who was soft on Hamas and Claudine Gay last week. You don't make me any more sad than Railman's rapist urges over on the main board.

" There's no economically viable way to upgrade the grid to fulfill your and Biden's vision of Red Chinese-built EVs everywhere"

Because we're so poor and in a depression, unlike Red China who can handle all the EV's they pump out....which is still less than Tesla.

The Lefty Mr. Musk otoh is promising energy abundance without the upgrades you are claiming. Mainly, because your math is way off.

Like anyone who is a fan of electric trains knows, electric motors are scores more efficient. I don't even use 300kwh on the car. The Central Air Conditioner (another thing that the grid isn't ready for according to the talking points) sucks up much more energy.

Three things:

- Some systems on some EVs are likely to have lower manufacturing process quality because they are still new.

- Reporting bias: you don't read about gasoline powered cars going up in flames, but they do.

- Probably some design tweaks are needed. If it's really true that battery performance degrades in cold weather, just heat up the battery compartment to 35 degrees F while you're heating up the much larger passenger compartment to 70 degrees.

Folks out there who drove stick know exactly what I mean. Thats a feeling that will be completely lost if EVs car ownership catches on.

That doesn’t make sense. The reason you get a “feel of the road” is because you change the gears yourself, instead of having a mechanism do it for you. An EV only has the one gear. Pressing the gas just applies the appropriate power, it is much more responsive and smooth than anything that requires shifting.

I personally like to drive. I just bought a brand new Toyota Corolla last August and absolutely HATE all the new features like lane assist, which even works a little when you shut it off. I can't even change the radio station without clicking 3 or 4 clicks while my driving is distracted. We have three cars. I always pick my Jeep Wrangler with manual transmission and only 15 mpg, even if I'm driving in city traffic.
