The problem is that tetraethyl lead was an anti knock additive. Once the lead was gone, Detroit had to manufacture engines with lower compression ratios, thus cutting down the engine knock along with HP and torque. This was noticed in the big and sporty cars like Caddys, Lincolns, Corvetts etc. As far as complaints went, there were more complaints over those ugly 5mph bumpers more than anything else.

That can lead to a slippery slope situation. Who decides what things are "for the good of society"? An example: In Pennsylvania, there was at one time a helmet law for motorcyclists. The masses objected and the law was repealed. Point being is that helmet laws are for the individual and not society. People now have the right to have their brains splattered amongst the pavement. Power to the people!! Your bike, your head!

The LT6 engine in the 2023 Corvette ZO6 has a 12.5:1 compression ratio. New 333 CID naturally-aspirated small block with 670 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque.

Loss of horsepower had nothing to do with TEL substitutes in gasoline, but in emissions controls and fuel economy after the early-70s oil crisis.

So that's when the govt steps in when they feel that people have not come together to regulate themselves. Thats where the govt can overreach its authority when it comes to the peoples freedom of choice. Govt should advise and warn but not restrict, like they did when they put warnings on cigarette packs

Right. None of these environmental changes are instant mandates. There is also no way Con Edison is shutting off the gas until at least 2050, if not 2060.

As a weak analogy, telephone party lines were already seriously outdated by 1960 but didn't disappear until after 2000. Coal heat for the home also took forever to disappear.

"Loss of horsepower had nothing to do with TEL substitutes in gasoline"

It certainly did. The compression ratios in early 70s cars were down to 8:1. HP on Caddys in the early 70s were less than they were on my 68 Nova (8.5). All due to lead being removed as an anti knock compound. Prior to that, compression ratios were 9;1 or better with belt HP ratings over 400.

It’s our government, it’s how we as a people act together. You are referring to the government as some external thing.

And anyway, negative externalities are still a thing. When they put those warnings on cigarettes, they weren’t thinking of second-hand smoke, they were thinking of the effects on the smoker himself.

I have. An acquaintance moved to Carlyle PA when she and her husband.retired. she was fiercely pro helmet but one Sunday the took a short spin around town. She went without one. Sitting at a red light, a guy backed out of his driveway and hit her broadside. She fell sideways and hit her head. Died on the spot.
