Saturday in flying: Delta 767 has escape slide deploy inside plane |
|
Posted by FYBklyn1959 on Mon Jun 12 19:52:19 2023 USA TodayDouble whammy: Plane's emergency slide deploys after flight diverts over instrument issue Zach Wichter USA TODAY Well, that’s not supposed to happen. A Delta Air Lines flight from New York to Los Angeles diverted to Salt Lake City on Saturday after the pilots noticed a potential issue with one of their instruments. While on the ground, the Boeing 767’s emergency slide was accidentally deployed at the gate, meaning the plane had to come out of service. The slide deployment was unrelated to the original issue that caused the diversion. “The safety of our customers and crew is our number one priority at Delta. We apologize to our customers on flight 520 on Saturday for the experience they had. Delta teams are fully investigating,” Morgan Durrant, a Delta spokesperson, said in an email statement. According to the airline, the flight crew never declared an emergency related to the instruments. One crew member was taken to the hospital for evaluation as a result of the slide incident, but Delta said they were released soon after. There were 168 passengers onboard the affected flight, and they were flown to their final destination by a different aircraft and landed later the same day. Per Airliners.net, plane was N189DN, a 1997 767-332ER. In happier times: ![]() That plane holds around 220 passengers, yet the pax were reloaded onto a 737-832, which has about 60 fewer seats. Not great load factors (it was a JFK-LAX flight, so DL may have wanted a widebody on it). |

My bet is that New York's poor economy had something to do with the light passenger load. And I'll bet that flights out of Austin and Nashville are packed. |

There are lots of NY to LA flights from both JFK and EWR on a number of airlines. 20 flights on a Saturday. Passenger loads are recovering nicely from the pandemic years. I don't think your premise has much merit. |

Good thread.Delta avoided disaster last week when a flight from Italy made an emergency landing. Jetblue, Boston to San Francisco made an emergency landing in Syracuse. Southwest out of BWI had some sort of mechanical issue too. I keep a close eye on aviation. |

I was on DL 520 a couple of months back. (It may very well have been that aircraft - the registration seems oddly familiar). Full flight as far as I could tell that day.Anyway there are so many factors that go into selecting the model for a flight. Even if it's empty in one direction it may be full in the other direction, and/or in this case it may return to JFK late in the day just in time for a turnaround to do a niche overnight transatlantic itinerary. Also, full or not full, a lot may depend on the type of first-class product (Delta One in this case) - if that's what was expected when people booked and forked over thousands of dollars. Big difference even in first class between having just a little more legroom instead of a lie flat bed. It could be worth having lots of empty seats in order to be sure that the richer crowd is pleased while crossing the entire country and doesn't take their business elsewhere. I wonder how much it's even actual humans mapping out those decisions anymore. My assumption is that the computers probably just calculate the best final financial outcome for the airline and someone just clicks "accept." Side note: Delta's 767s are old and it shows. But it's taking Boeing (and possibly also Airbus) forever to develop new stuff. |

Saturday is typically the lightest travel day and the return flight from LAX is usually pretty full (justifying 767-400ER some days) as it is the last flight that comfortably connects with a bunch of international flights from JFK. |

There really isn’t a good widebody replacement for the 767-300. The smallest A330NEO’s and 787’s are too big and too heavy when empty to economically operate transcons/thinner international routes that you don’t want on an A321XLR. |

One reason why I like Delta is that it tends to be really good at filling specific itineraries with specific aircraft (maybe in part because it's stuck with those aircraft. . .but still). Its creative use of the Boeing 717 over the years is a story in and of itself. |
