I was on DL 520 a couple of months back. (It may very well have been that aircraft - the registration seems oddly familiar). Full flight as far as I could tell that day.Anyway there are so many factors that go into selecting the model for a flight. Even if it's empty in one direction it may be full in the other direction, and/or in this case it may return to JFK late in the day just in time for a turnaround to do a niche overnight transatlantic itinerary. Also, full or not full, a lot may depend on the type of first-class product (Delta One in this case) - if that's what was expected when people booked and forked over thousands of dollars. Big difference even in first class between having just a little more legroom instead of a lie flat bed. It could be worth having lots of empty seats in order to be sure that the richer crowd is pleased while crossing the entire country and doesn't take their business elsewhere. I wonder how much it's even actual humans mapping out those decisions anymore. My assumption is that the computers probably just calculate the best final financial outcome for the airline and someone just clicks "accept." Side note: Delta's 767s are old and it shows. But it's taking Boeing (and possibly also Airbus) forever to develop new stuff. |
