Now It Hits Home. |
|
Posted by Fisk Ave Jim on Mon May 16 21:52:38 2022 I speak of shortages. I have some digestive issues & I was scheduled for a lower abdomen CT scan with contrast this coming Wednesday. Today I get a call from my MD saying that the contrast aspect of your test cannot happen b/c a nationwide shortage off the contrast dye.She suggested that a CT scan can happen but subjecting me to all that radiation without the contrast could result in an inconclusive test. Naturally I backed off so they want to treat me as if I had diverticulitis. Doing a little research, I find out that indeed there is a natiowide shortage of the contrast dye needed for such tests. Amazing! What next? I wonder if the dye comes from China? |

Posted by Stephen Bauman on Tue May 17 12:49:49 2022, in response to Re: Now It Hits Home., posted by Fisk Ave Jim on Tue May 17 10:37:57 2022. What the hell does that have to do with the contrast dyes shortage?? And what does anyones political philosophy have to do with the Chinese lockdowns?Let me connect the dots. An opportunity to contain or eliminate Covid was missed when the number of cases was in the hundreds or thousands, as was done with SARS-1, MERS, Ebola and many other infectious dieases. This was possible even in the absence of vaccines, therapeutics, tests, etc. Strict quarantines of those infected, distance and masking requirements for those not infected, contact tracing, etc. are the time tested method when neither vaccines nor therapeutics are available. These procedures involve the temporary sacrifice of individual liberties to which libertarians objected. The libertarians held sway raising alternate facts like herd immunity, unsubstantiated claims for repurposed drugs, downplaying Covid's seriousness, splitting hairs like dying "with" rather than "from" Covid, etc. The libertarians objected to any interference to their perceived freedom regardless how innocuous. It should be a parental decision and not the govt... they [parents] should decide weather or not they should wear masks The predictable result is that Covid has remained out of control to this day. Some totalitarian countries, like China, are immune from libertarian pressures and have adopted a zero Covid policy. This policy is designed to save lives, rather than the economy. They have been successful in containing it. Unfortunately, Covid has evolved over the last couple of years to be far more contagious. It takes only a single contact to start an uncontrolled infection. China did not adequately seal its borders by quarantining all visitors. China's only recourse is to contain the contagion until it runs its course, once it appears - economy be damned. Had libertarians' objections not blocked Covid containment in early 2000, and were meaningful travel restrictions today, the Shanghai outbreak would not have occurred. There is a breed of libertarians who have extended their freedom concepts to the economic sphere. Their golden rule is to do unto others BEFORE they do unto you. They abhor any government regulations, taxes, or other constraints on the unfettered pursuit of maximizing corporate profits. One way to maximize profits is to eliminate redundancy. Redundancy does improve availability at the cost of profits. That's why manufacturing, including the dyes required for your CT scan, are outsourced to China. Governments could place controls on the export of capital or require adequate strategic inventories at the corporate level. Such regulations are counter to economic libertarian policy. |

Posted by Stephen Bauman on Wed May 18 11:50:43 2022, in response to Re: Now It Hits Home., posted by Jeff Rosen on Tue May 17 23:31:33 2022. it really worked in New Zealand, the place you thought would never get an outbreak due to their great containment processes. It worked in New Zealand. NZ relaxed its border restrictions shortly before each outbreak. Start with the first graph on the link you provided. Switch to the logarithmic scale to see the stages of NZ's Covid infections. Here's a log cumulative comparison showing NZ and the US. Both countries experienced their first diagnosed cases at about the same time but took different approaches, starting in March 2020. You can see NZ's total cases leveled off in the middle of April 2020. Starting in April 2020, NZ's case counts include both community cases and those that were contained at the border with it's Mandatory Isolation and Quarantine (MIQ) policy. The actual growth in NZ's community cases is less than the relatively flat increase shown in the graph. There were no internal restrictions in NZ during this time. Occasional community outbreaks were contained through swift application of contact tracing and isolation. The first relaxation in the MIQ requirements occurred on 19 April 2021, between New Zealand and Australia. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-56796679 Aussies, who tested negative for Covid, were permitted to travel into NZ without going through the 14 day stay at an MIQ facility. Both Australia and NZ were assumed to be Covid free at that time. Covid outbreaks occurred in Melbourne and Sydney during May 2021. This was followed by the appearance of community cases in New Zealand. Contact tracing determined the outbreak was caused by a single Aussie, who tested negative during his brief NZ stay but tested positive on his return. This Aussie was initially infected in Australia, based on Covid's incubation period and genomic sequencing. NZ stopped the Australia-New Zealand travel bubble, starting on 23 July 2021. https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/new-zealand-suspends-quarantine-free-travel-with-australia-2021-07-23/ The Australia-New Zealand travel bubble was re-opened on 1 Nov 2021. https://www.travelpulse.com/news/destinations/australia-new-zealand-travel-bubble-resumes-in-run-up-to-reopening.html This was just before the Omicron wave started to hit. NZ rescinded the bubble on 21 Dec 2021. https://www.aljazeera.com/economy/2021/12/21/new-zealand-delays-border-reopening-to-february-over-omicron NZ did come up with a Covid exit strategy in mid to late 2021. It relied on a high vaccination rate, which NZ achieved. NZ decided to trust the vaccine and started re-opening its borders on 27 Feb 2022. Here's a description of the stages. https://www.beehive.govt.nz/release/border-reopen-stages-27-february As you can see, NZ's current case surge coincides with this staged re-opening. New Zealand has changed from a containment to a re-infection policy, starting in April 2021. The results have confirmed a containment strategy's effectiveness, rather than having contradicted it. |
