Astroland sold !! |
|
Posted by Newkirk Images on Tue Nov 28 18:59:19 2006 Just heard on the 6 o'clock news on Ch.4 and Ch.7 that Deno's Astroland Park has been sold and will make way for an indoor water and amusement park.On Ch.4, Sue Simmons mentioned that the Cyclone was safe, but Ch.7 didn't mention the Cyclone. They mentioned a new roller coaster. That's what my ears heard tonight. There was no mention about the Wonder Wheel. Aren't the Wonder Wheel and Cyclone landmarked ? Bill "Newkirk" |

I saw an earlier article about Thor Equities Coney Island project. I had no idea Astroland would be sacrificed. They better leave that Wonder Wheel alone. If they raze the Cyclone, count on Sea Beach Fred flying in on the red eye and raising holy hell !!Bill "Newkirk" |

Posted by heypaul on Tue Nov 28 20:50:17 2006, in response to Astroland sold !!, posted by Newkirk Images on Tue Nov 28 18:59:19 2006. Bill... Astroland, owned by Alpert Family, and Deno's Wonderwheel, owned by the Vourderis family, are two separate properties. The Alperts are selling the property that Astroland is on to Thor. The Cyclone is not owned by the Deweys and is not on the Astroland site. It is owned by the City and the Alperts operate it for them. They will continue to operate the Cyclone. The Alperts may relocate some of their rides to another location in Coney Island. There is a long thread about the sale at the Coney Island USA messageboard. http://www.coneyisland.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=news;action=display;num=1164739362 These developments are further evidence of my theory that the destruction of the venerable, historic and beautiful Stillwell Terminal marked the end of Coney Island. |

Posted by heypaul on Tue Nov 28 21:02:44 2006, in response to Re: Astroland sold !!, posted by heypaul on Tue Nov 28 20:50:17 2006. I just heard that Thor Equities has purchased the MTA's Coney Island Yard complex for $8 million. Thor will build a parking lot and a ferry terminal for people who are coming to Coney Island. They are also ironing out the final details for the purchase of Stillwell Avenue Terminal. Should this occur, Q service will terminate at Ocean Parkway, N service at 86th Street, F Service at Ave X and D service at 25th Ave. 24 hour shuttle bus service will be provided. |

The land is too valuable to store subway cars on. Thor is proposing 6 luxury high-rent, high-income only residential towers. The poor destroyed Coney Island anyway, who needs them. The Stillwell Terminal complex is part of the deal. Thor is leasing it back to the MTA for $750 million per year. As part of the deal they will also construct some low-income housing on the site of an old radium factory on Shell Road. |

Unfortunately, the green peace people are fighting the sale. There are two issues. There are an endangered species of sludge-eating catfish in the creek that borders the southern end of the yard. This alone would block devepment of the area. To compound the problems, there is a home-built submarine in that creek that has recently been declared a historic site by the landmarks preservation committee of the city of NY. The court battles were projected to last through the first half of the 21st century so the developer said "screw it" and took his plans to New Jersey. |

That woulda been a REALLY interesting rotting carcass on the boardwalk nowadays, but a rather interesting design. Spent one night on the tenth floor of Tracey Towers after a party and we got so snockered, I couldn't stand. Woke up at 6AM to this rattling like an earthquake along this this frequent mooing sounds ... it was arnines leaving for their runs in the basement. Dunno HOW people could live there. Heh.But looking out the window to what tracks were visible below, it was like being surrounded by a huge Lionel set. Could be worse I s'pose - they COULD build a highrise over a BUS garage. :) |

From trigger happy pigs who need the death penalty not being able to throw together a good coverup in Georgia, of all places to this attempt to sell a huge part of the City's infrasrtucure to a crooked land developer and relocatiing the poor (who needs them, in your words) to a radioactive wasteland so they can die prematurely. These developments are further evidence of my theory that the destruction of the venerable, historic and beautiful Stillwell Terminal marked the end of Coney Island. The old Coney Island died decades ago. It's been a squalid-filled rathole since. As long as Nathans, the Wonder Wheel and the Cyclone survive in some form, I welcome the development. Coney has been rebuilt several times over, so this is nothing new for this area. It was once a seaside resort for the rich, then the masses, then a slum. Perhaps a modern facelift would help restore it's luster. |

Coney Island has been long a ugly place. Six Flags Great Adventure is far superior but expensive, while Rye Playland is family friendly but too far to travel for some people. Like Casino Royale giving the 007 franchise a much needed face-lift, Coney Island needs the same as well. It needs to return to some of the speldor lost in the 1960's as a mecca for entertainment and summer fun. Remember the seedy Times Square area 15 years ago? Look at it now, you can't stay away from it, and there is always something to do up and down The Deuce. |

That'll be enough time for all the big, white-owned construction companies to set up minority owned fronts so that they can bid on the contracts specifically set aside for minority owned corporations. Just today, I saw an ad in the NY Post which said "Wanted: Black Men With Hammmers".Don't laugh. Consider the case of Liberman Broadcasting. It was a company owned by Jews of Polish origin that got a huge tax break when it bought a Los Angeles radio station a number of years ago by qualifying as a "minority owned" company. The family could trace itself back to ancestors who had been expelled from Spain in 1492, and therefore was entitled to be treated as Hispanic. My LIRR/NYCT blog |
