The big challenges to convert to electric will be heating and air travel.For heating, the cost of electric heat can get steep in colder regions. Heat pumps don't work that efficiently when you get significantly below freezing. Natural gas only costs about $.05 per kwhr. As for planes, sure you can build electric-powered turbine planes. But you need an energy source that packs a lot of energy per unit of weight, which batteries don't and jet fuel does. Hydrogen does, but it takes up a lot of volume, which then translates into weight of its container. |
