An 81-year-old man was assaulted in an attack that reportedly stemmed from a dispute over the “Make America Great Again” hat he was wearing at a Franklin Township supermarket, authorities said Tuesday.

The man, a township resident, suffered minor injuries and declined medical treatment following the assault that occurred Monday around 3:20 p.m. at an Elizabeth Avenue store, according to the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office.

“The incident reportedly began after the victim was confronted about the red ‘Make America Great Again’ hat he was wearing,” Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson said in a statement.

A spokeswoman for the prosecutor’s office declined to release more details on the incident, citing the active investigation.

It was not clear what led authorities to suspect the hat played a role in the alleged attack.

The prosecutor’s office Major Crimes Unit and Franklin police were investigating.

Anyone with information was asked to call county investigators at 908-231-7100, or the local police at 732-873-5533 or via the STOPit app. Tips can also be provided through Somerset County Crime Stoppers’ at 1-888-577-TIPS or online.

Somerset County is home to Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster.

I don't know where it happened but I saw a video of a guy in a Mexican restaurant wearing a MAGA hat. He had the hat ripped off his head by a drunk woman who claimed that he shouldn't be wearing that hat in a Mexican restaurant and that she was an Illegal immigrant. Well he called the police 👮 and it was determined that she was wrong about the hat but was correct about her status. She is now in ICE custody pending deportation. 😋😋😋

Which means that they made the conclusion but did not publicly explain their reasoning. It doesn't mean that the victim wasn't assaulted because of the hat.

He’s playing games. He’s doing what he thinks that some here do to him when he posts stories. Like when he posted the story about Jussie Smollet and some questioned whether he was even attacked because his story didn’t make sense.

While true, I really don't want them making overt efforts to solve that problem. The only way to catch more of them is some combination of "papers, please" and exit checkpoints, neither of which is a good thing. One of the few ways North American international air travel is superior to the way things are done on other continents is the lack of an exit checkpoint - I can transfer from a domestic to an international flight with no need for a long layover because there's no unpredictable line standing in the way of the transfer. I'm not sequestered in a tiny international departure zone while the rest of the airport's shops and services cater to domestic travelers (I'm looking at you, Seoul-Gimpo).

What you describe is a trade-off and may be a worthy trade-off. Random “your papers please” checks would not be.

Canadian: maybe, but they don't enter you into a database or anything, just look at whatever document you presented. Mexican: when I walked in to Tijuana they didn't even bother looking at our documents. They looked at us, were like "no bags? get out of here!" and pointed with their M4s to the door. I happily obliged.

I haven't had a completely casual entry into Canada like that since they stopped letting you enter by just showing your driver's license if they felt like asking for it.

A few years ago I entered by car at Eastport, ID and they actually made the car in front of me turn around and go back to the US.

Any time you are on the Adirondack it's that casual. Same with the normal entry booths w/cars, unless they decide to randomly give you the third degree.

With Nexus though there is an RFID in the card that's read when you drive up to the window, so I assume some database logs it, and since Nexus is a joint program with the US, both sides know about it.
