He also did more to advance civil rights than any President before and after. Kind of puzzling, if you think about it, given his background and history.

Abraham Lincoln was also a racist.

Basically, politically correct purity tests don't work on historical figures. The SJWs should shut the fuck up. Except about monuments to Confederates and Redeemers, those should be removed from their places of honor.

Not puzzling.

He was raised as a racist. He knew it was wrong but he was selfish, so if he wanted to use a racial epithet he wouldn't hold back if he didn't have to.

He also geared his language to his audience. I'm sure he didn't say that quote to a Northern Democrat, but he might have said it to a racist Southern Democrat to persuade them to vote his way. His best path to getting them to agree to something would have been to say "If you don't vote for this bill, which you hate (and I'm pretending to hate), something worse will pass."

Wouldn't be suprised at all if he did say it. Many politicians use these tactics as a means to an end not out of the goodness of their hearts. Lincoln for example with the Emanicaptuon Proclamation. The key is the knowledge they need our vote and hold these guys accountable for it and of course vote. I'm not all all hoodwinked by these politicians. They use us we need to use them back.

You're right. Lincoln used the Emancipation Proclamation more as a political and military statement, than as a real legal motion on slavery. The idea of the Proclamation was to drive home to people on both sides, that the South was now losing the war.

Lincoln was our greatest President, but like all politicians, he was also a pragmatist.
