Based on Florida law the result was correct. I think the prosecution would have had a better chance convicting on Aggravated Battery, which has stiff sentences in Florida. It is also less susceptible to a self defense claim. However I don't think state attorney wanted a conviction.

The prosecutor overcharged based on public pressure instead of going after what may have been guaranteed, though it may have resulted in a lesser sentence. Once I saw Murder 1, I knew he would be found not guilty.

There is legitimate question about whether Martin contributed as seen in text messages with girlfriend. They were also in a fight and pavement can be a dangerous weapon. Zimmerman caused Martin's death and had he not pursued Martin no criminal charges would have happened, but proving an intentional crime beyond a reasonable doubt isn't easy.
