‘Suddenly there is a Confederate flag flying’ in Seattle’s Greenwood area — well, not quite

A story about the times we live in, and assumptions we can make in our current political climate.

The news tip a few days ago said:
“Hi. Suddenly there is a Confederate flag flying in front of a house in my Greenwood neighborhood. It is at the north-east corner of 92nd and Palatine, just a block west of 92nd and Greenwood Ave N. I would love to know what this ‘means’ … but of course don’t want to knock on their door. Maybe others in the area are flying the flag? Maybe it’s a story? Thank you.”
It was from Rebecca Morris, who is an author of The New York Times best-seller true-crime books.

So, of course, we drove to that corner.

There was no wind, and on a flagpole there was what obviously was the U.S. flag at the top, and below, a red flag with blue stripes.

Simply hanging down, not spread out, you could make some assumptions that it was the star-filled “Southern cross” of the Confederacy.

Darold Norman Stangeland lives at the corner house.

“That’s a Norwegian flag,” he says. “It’s been up there since the start of the Olympics.”

The Norwegian flag has a red background, with an off-center white-and-blue cross.

Norway, so far, has won 13 gold, 11 silver and nine bronze medals at the Pyeongchang 2018 Olympic Winter Games, totally dominating the event.

“I’m a proud Norwegian-American. My parents emigrated here in the mid-1950s. He skippered tugboats,” Stangeland says.

If you do some Googling, you find other incidents in which the same mistake happened.

From The Lewisboro Ledger in New York, Oct. 18, 2012: “Confederate or Norwegian? Flag misunderstood in reservation.”

The woman who had the small Norwegian flag on her property on Ward Pound Ridge Reservation was reported to the reservation’s office and was quoted, “It was embarrassing. Everyone in the county was asking me if I’m flying a rebel flag.”

When told she had mistaken the flag, Morris says, “Are you kidding me?”

She says she had even looked up the Confederate flag online and it sure looked to her like the flag on that corner.

But on a second look, “Well, it does look like the Norwegian flag!”

She says, “Maybe that’s the story … we’re so stressed by all things political that we see things that aren’t there.”

Better hope the Russian bots don’t decide to repost their slightly altered version.

We need to stop with this characterization of our political opponents as being "Loony", having "mental disorders", etc. Mostly, the right says it about the left, but sometimes it's the other way around as well. We need to acknowledge that the other side consists of people whose opinions deserve to be taken seriously, not just dismissed. I liked the Oprah Winfrey segment on 60 minutes last week, about a group of people who are trying to do that. In this case, it is the heightened tensions in this country that caused this misperception. Let's try to lower them, not inflame them further.

And no, the right doesn't do it more than the left. The left calls many of them to the right of them Nazis, deplorable and everything else. So no, it's not mostly the right. It's both.
And the real problem is the defense of the loony left or right instead, and calling them what they are. This story IS the description of the loony left

No, the collective left needs to stop acting like lunatics. Case in point, monuments! Suddenly statues that stood for decades become symbols of hate. Leftist loons begin their quest and spend every waking hour hunting monuments, demanding removal or even vandalizing them. They form committees to seek out "symbols of hate" and to remove them. Then suddenly, the siege is over and the loons are off on their next crusade. But my all time favorite is the constant attack on "privileged white males" by the left. Especially since many of the attacking masses are privileged white males, themselves. Now that is lunacy.

???? What the heck are you talking about? I have never done such a thing. I don't know anything about him other than I have been here since 1998 too, and he used to post under his actual name.
But I never threatened him. At all.
As for "stalker", I only mean it that he seems to have a hard on for me, every time I make a post, he says "Mr moderate", and the like. He can't seem to not. I don't see him doing that to anyone else.
I have NO idea what you are talking about however.

There are skinheads and there are skinheads. If you're talking fascistic racist skinheads, they are definitely on the left. The original UK-type skinheads, who did not always sport shaved heads and rode around on scooters; although they had an affinity for the "working class", a lot of them were apolitical.

And if you really examine the beliefs of those you're calling "religious nuts", you'll see that their politics align with the left also.

So start rethinking the paradigm the media has pushed on you. Just a little bit.

What makes you think "holy rollers" are on the right? The people who dance and shake at church?

Remember, the right in the US context has to do with adherence to the US Constitution and protecting the rights recognized therein. That would not include those who engage in pagan-like ecstatic behavior at what is supposed to be a Christian service.
