Fred,American Jews vote overwhelmingly Democratic because the Democratic Party platform aligns far more closely to Jewish religious values than the Republican Party. For example, the social programs that Democrats like to fund line up with a number of Jewish values and teachings. So does opening the doors to immigrants. Jews have often been an oppressed group within various societies over time and as a result, vote to support the downtrodden, even if we ourselves are not in that position today. And the reality is with a few exceptions, Democrats are still supportive of Israel; the two state solution is a necessity for Israeli interests (as well as American ones, though I've said before and will say again that Obama has certainly helped to make a mess of that neighborhood in recent years). The GOP as it currently operates simply does not align itself with the values Jews care about most. Lastly, many Jews vote as Americans who happen to be Jewish, rather than Jewish Americans. In other words, we vote to support the country we are living in, and whether or not that country supports Israel is not the primary factor in how we determine our vote. When I vote, the question I ask is how will this candidate (regardless of whether they have an R or a D after their name) help to further the interests of the United States, because that is the question we should all be asking as we vote. Feel free to ask any followup questions, I'm happy to try answering them. |

Outside of the statement about a "two state solution" I agree with this concise statement on the voting behavior of American Jews.I do not believe a "two state solution" is capable of working in the current environment because while I believe Israel would hold up its end of the deal, I do not believe the other side would. Moreover, there is no workable solution for Jerusalem. The rest of Israel is highly segregated in terms of Arab neighborhoods, Jewish neighborhoods, etc. (sort of like Long Island, which is diverse as a whole but you have neighborhoods like Garden City which is 95% White, Christian next to 95% Black Hempstead) so you could in theory gerrymander some borders. I note that this is all a hypothetical exercise because the "Palestinians" only want one state and that that state has 0% Jews. |

I didn't say an independent Palestinian state has to be declared tomorrow. The current atmosphere is not right by any means, but that doesn't mean that Israelis and Jews should not be trying to create a situation where that can be achieved once it is appropriate to do so. And while they won't say it, my understanding is the Palestinians realize their capital is likely to be in Ramallah or Abu Dis, not Jerusalem, and that Jerusalem (including the Old City) will remain under Israeli control. |
