The Revised Common Lectionary insists on using the St John Passion on Good Friday, which blames "the Jews". At least it's not Matthew though (27.25 is the worst verse). If I had a clerical collar, I would stick two fingers up to the lectionary and read the Passion from Luke. I would further ignore the lectionary by getting rid of the thoroughly inappropriate reading from Isaiah 52-53. |

Which was why I only went to Evensong last Sunday, where we escaped with Matthew's more subtly nasty Parable of the Vineyard. The whole year of Matthew thing sucks as a lectionary concept. That the escapes from Matthaean nastiness are Johannine nastiness and obscurity scarcely encourages me to go to church. I am looking forward to Advent Sunday. |
