Are you contending that modern Jews (in general, not considering converts) are not descendents of Jews 2000 years ago? This is not a petty question. There are groups that contend this. Isn't there fairly good evidence that Sephardic Jews are more closely related to Israelites of 2000 years ago than Ashekanzi Jews, because the Askenazi intermarried heavily with Europeans of non-Jewish descent? |

Why do you sound offended? Most of world Jewry lives outside of Israel and live in countries that have intermixed with European people. A large chunk of Israel's own population have come from Eastern and Central Europe (aka Whitelandia) and are mostly indistinguishable from ethnic Euros. In Jesus' times they were almost all concentrated in Eretz Israel and looked the part. You think they looked like Scarlett Johannson who BTW is an 11 They looked like the Israeli Ayelet Ben-Shahar seen below. But Jesus was from Bethlehem, in Israel (unless you want to drag in modern politics) while Paul was from what would now be southern Turkey. -------------------------- *This brings up what could be another interesting (but probably not profitable in this forum) discussion. How do you know they were not subject to genocide, since they disappeared from recorded history? And assuming they were not, sure their descendants are around today, but how do you know they are not so intermixed with other people that they are indistiguishable as ethnic groups? Maybe today's Iranians, Iraqis, and Syrians are descended from the lost tribes as well as numerous other sources. |

My mother in her youth, until she moved to a better country, lamented that she didn't inherit those features and thus couldn't hide her Jewishness.It's plausible that Jews already had DNA for more "white" features from before the exile, but evolution in Europe favored such features while it didn't in the Middle East/North Africa. i.e. Jews were more attracted to other Jews who looked "white." This might have also allowed a small amount of intermarriage and rape to express itself over a large population over generations. Studies that test ancestry use Y-chromosomes and mtDNA, which aren't selected for. In that there are no traits in those genes which make someone more or less fit or attractive except for the occasional disorder with those genes. |

Now that we have genetic testing, we can test that proposition.One of my daughters did the "23 and me" thing (though I discouraged it). They only had her dna swab and no questionnaire that could give them hints as to her ethnicity. It came back that her ethnic ancestry was 46% Ashkenazi Jew and 46% Northern European* ancestry, with the "other" 8% being less determinate (like "2.8% Neanderthal"). I thought that was remarkable; I expected some more "mixing" in there. I know that is a ridiculously small sample, but it's food for thought since it is the end-product of many centuries of ancestry. It may be changing now, but even people in the U.S. have tended to prefer mates close to their own regional background. -------------- *IIRC, they defined the Northern European as being a swath from the UK through France and the low countrues to Germany. |
