Our defense budget is bigger than the total governmental budgets of all but the next 8 countries on Earth.

List of government budgets by country

The DoD budget doesn't even include the foreign military aid appropriations found in the Dept of State's budget, the Coast Guard's found in DHS's, the budgets of the intelligence community, the nuclear part that is part of DoE's, veteran's health care, the GI Bill and and other such benefits that are part of the VA budget and other appropriations linked to the military budget that are dispersed throughout several depts and agencies.

Because they are the reason for this need in the first place. Most people do not need guns. Hunting is a hobby, it requires a license that's kinda costly. Where is the problem with requiring a license for ammunition? We all pay for police protection for all. Crime is down. Aside from those in significantly rural areas that need guns for protection from wildlife, nobody needs a gun anymore.

Oh yeah, all those people Germany disarmed before WWII were told the same thing. They didn't "need" guns. The difference between us and them being that freedom has always been an integral part of our culture.

In other countries, not so much.

Just because one has the right to do something doesn't mean it's well advised or the right thing to do. I have no problem with legitimate hunters, who generally are incredibly responsible with their weapons and keep them locked up unloaded outside of hunting trips. I have no problem with rural homeowners that need a gun to separate the bear from the baby.

However, there's too many incompetents that think a gun is somehow going to protect them from crime that's way too unlikely to happen. They are the ones that end up burying their kid when one shoots their sibling or friend when they find and start playing with the gun. Happens every freekin day in the US. One can imagine the carnage these idiots would create if they were carrying out in public places. I want no part of it. BTW neither does the NRA. These massacres are making them look bad.

While I consider licensing for possession and ownership of a simple firearm to be unconstitutional, until a time when licensing laws are struck down, any such fees should be no more than the what is necessary to cover the expenses for the issuing bureaucracy.

The power to tax is the power to destroy.

Constitutional rights cannot be destroyed by government or anyone else by neither direct legislation nor by indirect means.

The Government has the authority to increase cigarette taxes in order to discourage the otherwise legal activity of smoking.

The Government has to power to increase fuel taxes beyond what is necessary to construct and maintain transportation infrastructure if its goal is to encourage conservation and energy independence.

The Government DOES NOT have the power to tax the exercise of an individual's constitutional rights.

Excessive fees on gun registration or licencing would be akin to poll taxes for voting or the notorious Stamp Act of 1765.

Both the Legion and AARP support expanding the budgets of those they represent. Never heard the NRA talk about expanding enforcement budgets.

Driver license renewals are inching up to that $100 figure. That's no hardship. The majority of people drive. A minority want guns. They should cover the cost of their regulation and enforcement,if even in just a token sense. Maybe it'll dissuade some from bothering.

Gun violence will go down as there are fewer guns around to be violent with.

I'm a taxpayer, and taxes are used to provide roads. I own a car. (100(ish) years ago that's all you needed.) As someone who pays for roads, I have a right to use them. The reason for licenses is to ensure safe operators are on the public roads to ensure public safety. The same reasoning is behind licensing, registration however you phrase it,for gun owners. Education and proven competency are just as required if you're shooting a gun as you cannot ensure the bullet won't leave your property (with rare exception) where it becomes a public safety hazard. If you leave your home with a gun and travel on the public roads, you are a public safety hazard. Guns are dangerous, nothing changes that.

As someone who pays for roads, I have a right to use them.

You have no such right because no such right exists.

The Government can mandate alternate day driving or ban driving for all but certain personnel like the military, first responders and postal workers.

They can ban certain kinds of polluting vehicles from the roadways.

They can ration fuel and/or overtax it for private individuals.

The Government can also ban the manufacture and importation of new passenger vehicles for individual use as was done during WW2.

The taxes you pay for roads under the National Interstate and Defense Highway Act of 1956 are for national security purposes and not for your non-existent "right to drive".

Meanwhile, the point of the 2nd amendment was to provide recruits for a militia (whose primary purpose was the capture of escaped slaves) and/or draft a military without the expense of maintaining one (which the new country could both ill-afford nor had the taste for after English army occupation, at the expense of draftees It was not to ensure private citizens could assemble personal armories. There's plenty of documentation to that. It was about getting slave holding states to sign on.

Yet you'd tolerate an accident, i.e. your kid shooting someone while playing with the gun they found on the nightstand.

There are a lot of things that I don't like but that I however tolerate as the price of living in a free and democratic society.

The inevitability of an otherwise statistically insignificant number of gun accidents is one of them.

The existence of a morally insignificant figure like Fred Phelps is another.
