Some impoverished people work very hard and many do better themselves. Others work hard and fail to accomplish anything. Luck has a good part to play in who succeeds and who doesn't but often this is due to the abilities the person possesses. Anyone who succeeds must have had the traits to do so—i.e., a person with an IQ of 87 is never going to gain a respectable position in the corporate world no matter how hard they work.

And then there are those that don't even try. Many minority individuals fall into this category, as they are less inclined to work hard. The point is that most poor people today are poor not because of lack of opportunity but rather lack of ability; our society is indeed fairer than it first appears. This will become even more true as social barriers to success continue to be removed.

Indeed, this has been studied, and as it turns out that one's income (among middle class whites anyway, who were presumably the target population of this behavioral genetic study) is highly heritable, and all of the relationship between parents and their children in earnings is due to heredity (i.e., the parents' resources doesn't affect their children's eventual salaries).
