If they made Long Island a through route, it wouldn't be the same place it is today. Long Island, for all it's pockets of sprawl also has many untouched extremely pretty spots that would all be sprawl if it was a through route. For all it's faults, it's still amazing that Long Island is as "undeveloped" as it is in many spots, being SO close to one of the biggest cities in the world.Furthermore, our traffic would be even worse than it is now if it had through traffic too, and it would be BOTH directions then. More roads would have been needed, and that also would have brought much more development than we even already have. So there are some cons to Long Island being a "dead end", but I think the pros far outreach the cons in this particular case. |
