Some irreligious societies have been as bad as or worse than some religious ones. Atheism has freed us from superstitions. But atheism per se is not logically tied to any particular moral code of conduct. Without religion, we are free to remove certain constraints from our thinking about morality. We can ignore the religious concept of "sin", and instead we can try to evaluate our actions based on their inherent merits and demerits and their effects on others. |
