Then what you are saying is that human nature is the problem. Humans will always follow charismatic leaders be they religious or atheists who create so-called state religions.You are correct, wars -- and religion -- are expressions of human nature. Society has been making progress, however gradually, through various means, towards reducing the incidence and severity of conflicts. Either way wars will continue and so will human suffering. Atheism is not a solution to anything. Actually, to the contrary, moving towards rational and evidenced-based solutions to problems serves to alleviate human suffering and improve the quality of life. As I've noted, as society has dis-embraced religion, society has improved. And as Sam Harris argues in his book, The Moral Landscape, science has advanced to the point that it can give us insight into how to solve moral problems, problems where relying on religion for answers (such as the case with embryonic stem cell research or whether the terminally ill have the right to self-euthanasia) lead us to misguided solutions that only serve to prolong suffering. |
