Levittown was a serious race issue from the 1950's onward.Think about it - - you cannot buy a house unless you sign a restrictive covenant which forbids you to perform any business transaction, reselling your home, subletting or renting it out otherwise, to anyone who is black. From the 50's onward? that is no longer a legal stipulation, and no longer in force. You do not have to sign any such paper in the present, and obviously blacks can buy there. There are many communities that began on not the greatest of terms. There's a community in Yaphank that was a severe German community back in the 30's. If you are a resident of Park Ave in Yaphank, on your deed in parenthesis, is "Adolf Hitler Drive". Obviously it was changed to Park Ave many MANY years ago, but it still is on the deed, as are any name changes in parenthesis on deeds. That doesn't mean that what those people once thought was a good thing still survives there. |
