Most NYC residents are surprised to hear about suburbs with high crime rates. Regarding 'working class' towns. Do you think that they are getting worse, headed towards 'Roosevelt' or holding their own? I've felt for a long time that the working class in America is in decline. Many working class people emulate ghetto behavior in public.

I grew up in well-off Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. I guess we were wealthy by 1960s and 70s standards but not millionaires. We had white-collar and blue-collar neighbors and everyone behaved in the same middle-class way. I don't see that today and can't figure out why.

If you talk to people who haved moved out of the city you get the sense that in some subtle ways the middle-class is fleeing the working class. They don't want their college-bound kids mingling with the trouble-making working-class students. What is going on?
