King ended Jim Crow, a system of laws and customs in the Deep South that mandated segregation and oppression, enforced by terrorism. King showed that, like Mahatma Gandhi, nonviolent direct action was highly effective in creating positive social change. King successfully advocated against the disenfranchisement of Black voters in Jim Crow states, and put an end to over a century of Black people being denied their right to vote. King was instrumental in getting the Civil Rights Act before Congress for a vote (it was JFK's bill, LBJ pushed it through, but it was King who got JFK to introduce it in the first place).Oh, and King did this in a time when he was one of the "most hated men in America" for daring to challenge an unjust, unequal, and unacceptable state of affairs under which Black Americans were forced to live. For all this, he paid with his life. |
