Yes, they "had to." The alternative would have been to allow the Confederacy to exist, and along with it, slavery.

Perhaps it could have been prevented if the northern states had voted for Douglas, or Breckinridge, and would have continued the then-existing Democratic Party policy of letting the South do as they pleased.
