The Type 1 (Beetle) made it all the way to 1979, the VW Vanagon (Type 2) with the air-cooled engine went to 1982 (after that they experimented with a water-cooled boxer engine that they didn't get right; experienced coolant leaks and erosion of the cylinder surface heads), and the air-cooled Porsche 911 made it all the way to 1998. The last air-cooled Type 1 was manufactured in Mexico in 2003.
