I would re-check some of your family's documents before making that assumption.

My parents and grandparents entered the US before WWI. However, they did not become citizens for 20 to 30 years later. This was not uncommon at that time.

Both my parents were naturalized citizens, when I was born in the US. However, they were not citizens when my older siblings were born in the US. That would make their legal status the same as the people you would now deny citizenship.
