I want to add that the “Washington Redskins” were originally named “Boston Braves,” named after the baseball team that now plays in Atlanta. The name changed to Redskins when they moved to Fenway Park in 1933 after one season at Braves Field (they moved to Washington in 1937). The team owner was well-known racist George Preston Marshall,* so I’m not willing to give him the benefit of the doubt that it’s a respectful homage. Marshall was so racist that the Redskins were the last NFL team without a black player, and were only forced to sign one because their landlord was the federal government and they forced them.
