"Chief" is a normal English word having no necessary connection to aboriginal Americans. The team was named after a local politician nicknamed "chief" who pulled strings to get the team moved there from Dallas. They just adopted Aboriginal iconography.

"Braves" would be the equivalent of "Maccabees." That was chosen (indirectly) as a respectful homage.
