You are, of course, correct in the broad picture. However, France was one of the "Big 4" in the early 60s. Since then they've been in a virtual free-fall in world esteem. I suspect that Algeria and Viet Nam gave them the push over the cliff but their continuing antagonism toward their long-time allie, the US, has not given them the status that they'd hoped for in the world community. |
