Right, an Israeli ambassador to the US is totally the most unbiased person who could possibly comment on the matter.Although actually, despite his efforts, a little bit of honesty starts creeping in around the edges of his article. He claims that using the word "apartheid" is part of a massive conspiracy to destroy Israel through use of language, which is thoroughly bullshit. But then, he admits to segregation and then tries to handwave it by saying "terrorism" as if this somehow made it not exist. He claims it's the Palestinians' choice to be segregated which sounds quite a bit like victim blaming. He tries to claim that segregation is minimised by saying Palestinians can study at an Israeli university in "a settlement," somehow managing to gloss over the fact that he is talking about an illegal Israeli encroachment onto Palestinian territory which, while not only a bad thing by itself, doesn't help all that much with the claim that Israel doesn't have apartheid— "you're not allowed to leave the dedicated Palestinian Land, but we'll let you study at the university we built on the part of that land we took over." Then he declares that Palestinians are not subject to the jurisdiction of Israeli courts— except when Israel decides to lock up Palestinians for violating laws that Israel passed but which Israelis don't have to obey, in which case said Palestinians don't get a trial at all except for a kangaroo court that Israelis are not subject to. You know for someone complaining that it's unfair to call Israeli policy "apartheid," he all but admits that it is. I think I'm going to have to take the word of a Jewish American who wrote a thesis on the subject, who advised me of several important points: (1) Israel continually pleads for peace while annexing Palestinian lands and encroaching on their territory bit by bit. (I believe the exact phrase was "Israel and Palestine sit down to discuss how to divide the pie while Israel is currently eating the pie.") (2) The wall in the West Bank sliced up communities, creating tremendous hardship for a lot of people, while also effectively annexing part of the West Bank for Israel. (3) Between the wall, blockades, occupation, and travel restrictions, Israel practices a form of apartheid— although the Palestinian territories are under various degrees of Israeli control, their inhabitants are not considered full Israeli citizens. and most importantly: (4) Trying to have a reasonable debate with an Israeli nutter is a futile endeavour. I have been heeding this advice over the last few days. |
