Actually, the Republicans never filibustered anything. They would threaten to filibuster, and then the Democrats would retract or water down whatever bill was being discussed. The Republicans never had any power at all, but the Democrats voluntarily decided to pretend that they did. I distinctly recall Obama himself declaring that he refused to let the Democrats pass any health care reform bill unless it had "bipartisan" support, and we all know how well that went. While voter suppression and gerrymandering have given the Republicans a significant edge, I think the defining factor in the 2010 midterms, if not the 2012 election was the simple fact that the Democrats never actually did any of the things they had promised to simply because the Republicans said a certain f-word. The Democrats could have changed the rules to remove the filibuster, or they could have merely called the Republicans' bluff— a real filibuster is hard to sustain (they'd get tired or hungry eventually) and they'd earn the ire of the nation while doing so since even CNN would have a hard time spinning that. But no; the Democrats retracted every proposal the Republicans threatened to filibuster, and so the nation went to the polls in 2010 with a choice between the Democrats who made empty promises and refused to deliver despite having complete control of government, and the Republicans who didn't do any clearly bad things in the last two years and it's not like Americans are known for their long-term memory. |
