I hope so. The American system (before and after Obama care) is very complicated, but not in such a way as to encourage competition or keep down costs. The single payer system works reasonably well in Britain and in Canada. In all conscience, I must add that in a recent hospital visit in Canada, what I saw was a system dedicated to rigid enforcement of rules, without much regard to patient comfort. Also there was no easy way to correct errors without going through an elaborate bureaucratic procedure. In my case the hospital failed to provide my with my usual medications on which I am dependent. It took four days to correct the error, causing me to suffer unnecessary pain and to stay in hospital three days longer than should have been necessary. |
