When Martin Luther first started to rail against the papacy, it was over monetary contributions to the Papal States. The pope at the time was Alexander VI, unquestionably the most corrupt head of the church ever. When contributions to finance his wars were insufficient, he decided to raise more money by selling indulgences. The nobility of northern Germany responded favorably to Luther's calls to keep their money, instead of sending it to Rome. Luther's doctrinal differences came later. |
