GOP Rep. King Introduces Bill To End Birthright Citizenship

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), one of Congess' biggest xenophobes, has introduced a bill that would effectively gut the Fourteenth Amendment's guarantee of birthright citizenship. King's proposed law, based on his view of the Constitution, is aimed squarely at children of undocumented immigrants who are born here.

The Fourteenth Amendment holds that "all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside." Over the years, the Supreme Court has reaffirmed that definition many times, even ruling that the immigration status of a US-born baby's parents are not an issue with regard to the citizenship of the baby.

Further, US policy holds that a baby born on a ship in US waters, or on an airplane flying over US airspace, even if the plane never lands in the US, is an American citizen. (All Mommy or Daddy has to do is file for a birth certificate from the state over which the baby was born).

But, hey, the Constitution isn't an impediment to our GOP friends, now is it?
