Latke are a REGULAR in this house ... can only get them "holidays" in the various stores around here (and yes, a VERY large Jewish community here which means that you make them at home since "storebought" is fey) ... and salt and sour cream is the ONLY way to eat them. :)Hell, I remember when Knishes weren't square fat yellow jokes with "texture" ... they were just round things like kasha - potato inside, round baked crust surrounding. Tattie scones (if from a Scottish IMPORTER) are every bit as much a delicacy as Latke is to goyim. Heh. Ya really gotta TRY it ... imagine a sort of potato/flour baked thingy that's done like a pizza only the "pie" is maybe 6 inches in diameter. 8 slices out BEFORE cooking, and you get these wedgie things that are 3 inches or so from the point to the circumerence and 45 degrees of triangle to it, about 1/2 inch or so high ... as boring as they might sound, a plob of butter on it, perhaps a wee bit of salt if you're so inclined, and they're MOST intereting indeed. Though I *prefer* latke if I had to make a choice. But STILL the treat ... doesn't work well with sour cream. Heh. But if you can FIND them in the states, WELL worth checking out ... |
