Is it just me or did they re-engineer that bus to have a standard rear engine configuration as per something like what Nova did with the LFS artic?

Note to North American builders: THIS is what a transit bus should be.

Note to European builders: Build these here without being too quirky (e.g. powertrain and layout), and you've potentially got a winner.

I wish our buses could be as advanced or stylish as Europe's...

European buses are often designed with true double-stream doorways, and the door panels can actually be opened individually. If someone is only getting off the bus, only the rearward half (towards the front axle) of the door would be opened, and only the forward half might be opened if someone is only getting on.

Ironically I was just thinking about Mercedes and their reputation in the United States as being a luxury car brand because of the fact that they don't sell their own badged cars and trucks here to maintain that.

I would imagine that this bus would be branded as the Orion VIII rather than the Mercedes Citaro because I am betting that more than a few people would care about seing their so-called "luxury car brand" on a transit bus.

It is a nice bus even if it reminds me of the Van Hools a bit. I rode a few in Salzburg, Austria during the summer of 2005. Is this the first time that a Citaro has come to the Americas?

That's kind of how I felt when Volvo transit buses showed up in the U.S. It could also pose a problem for Daimler because Setra luxury coaches are branded Mercedes-Benz here.

Perhaps having the Mercedes-Benz logo will have the opposite effect: "Mercedes build luxry cars, I can't imagine what this bus will be like."

And actually it s pretty impressive. Drivers who took a look at it commented on how it was like driving a Mercedes car. Also this demo had luxuries like power drivers' window and tilting/telescopic dash.

There was a Mercedes Fuel Cell Citaro in BC a few years ago.

I can appreciate that it is a big difference to standard American buses from what I have seen of them, but the whole dash panel moving with the steering wheel when it's adjusted is nothing new. Volvo were fitting this to their buses in Europe a good six or seven years ago.

Earlier this morning, approx 9am on my way to work...

Not to mention, there were a few Brooklyn Division training buses running around the vicinity of 96th/Lex, including #9466 (Grand Av), which was the only one i recalled...rear sign said "S79" which kinda told me something was going on in the area...there were at least 5 training buses around, mainly Novas.

Anyways, the Citaro artic has a blue MTA logo on the front above the passenger side headlamp and was numbered #0050. I got a few shots and a video of it, will post when i get home...

IMO, these - or any modern European buses - can't come to the U.S. quickly enough.

Heck, even the Solaris Urbano I rode in Lausanne - although little more than a bastardized Neoplan Centroliner, IINM, felt more modern than many contemporary North American buses.

Great shots! Thanks for sharing!
