Also great in those shots are the old Roosevelt Field terminal and the old Hempstead Bus Terminal layover area -- that N6 is sitting right in the middle of today's terminal if I'm looking at it correctly.

Yep. That's the old Roosevelt Field terminal. It was a U-shaped driveway that came up to the mall on the west side (near where the Sbarro's is today). Far better for riders than todays silly location out in the middle of nowhere.

My memories of such things go back to around 1978 or so, and I'm pretty sure that the N19 went to Sunrise Mall then.

I believe the mall opened in 1973 -- I don't know if the N19 went there immediately, but I assume that before the mall opened the N19 just continued straight down Merrick Road.

5301,
Thanx for these. I've always like Gilligs (and Grummans). Rode these on occasions and they were fun. Gilligs always seem to work on other properties and, to me, symbolize being on a trip or vacation somewhere. Sorry that MSBA could not get them to work properly, although they had better luck with the Grummans than the city did. What's the old saying ... "one man's meat is another's poison"? It shows to go you!

There have been known to be typos from these lists. Also there seems to be a mistake with the manufactures serial numbers listed.

Some "progress" at Roosevelt Field...huh. You'd think in the age of "global warming" and high gas prices malls would do better to encourage environment and economy friendly mass transit.
The only malls on Long Island that I know of to have bus stops by the mall entrance are both in Metrocard-unfriendly Suffolk, Walt Whitman and Smith Haven. Suffolk has schedules at many of their stops too. Sometimes you have to wonder which county is more mass transit friendly...

Suffolk's late 80s Gilligs lasted much longer, I remember a few of them at CBS. I think they were retired in 2005 when the new Gilligs came in. The ST ones were labeled in the 900s I think and were 40 feet. The ones at CBS still ran very well.

John, I have to correct you. The Gilligs that you are referring to 9xxs at CBS,EBT , Inter county bus and 91xx at Suffolk Bus were 1991 Gillig Phantoms. The Gilligs from the 80s which there was only 3 of them left in 2005 which were 8703 , 8730,8731 which were from 1986 which Suffolk bus had.
