Buses in Champain-Urbana, Illinois (56K=walking to Danville) |

Posted by FYBklyn1959 on Sat Jul 21 11:24:13 2007 (Danville is a city about 30-35 east of Champaign-Urabana)For those who don't know, Champaign and Urbana, Illinois is the home of the University of Illinois. Located in east central Illinois, about 125 miles south of Chicago via I-57. The two cities and the surrounding community have a population of over 100,000 and still growing every year. I lived out there in the early 70s, when my mother was a graduate student at U of I. I have been back for several visits, including June of last year. The Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District (MTD) is considered one of the best small transit agencies in the country, and won the APTA award for best small system (< 100 buses) in 1986 and 1994. Some pics follow: New Flyer D40LFs 0320 and 0327 southbound on Wright St at Green St in the heart of campus. Wright St is also the border between Champaign (on the right side of the pic) and Urbana. 0319 eastbound on Green St, east of Wright. Green and Wright is one of several MTD hubs, others being downtown Urbana and the Illinois Terminal, located in downtown Champaign, which serves as an MTD, Greyhound and Amtrak station. 2 views of New Flyer D60LF 0105 on Green St. 0112 northbound on Wright St. This appears to be one of the newest buses in the MDT fleet (I saw 2 of these, 0556 and 0557). It's an Eldorado National product, can anyone identify the model? MTD has this new program called StopWatch, which has these boards posted at various hubs, which gives the time of arrival of the next buses. Very handy. Later on, I'll post some general pics of the C/U area on OTChat. More info on MTD's StopWatch MTD main page |

Couple pics I forgot:MTD bus stop sign Not an MTD bus, but this may be a bus operated by (or under contract to) the Danville Mass Transit District on their route 10, which operates from Danville (about 30 or so miles east of C/U) to the C/U area via Interstate 74. |

The 93s seem to be inactive. I saw some parked in the yard (along with a few Flxibles!) Maybe the 94s are as well, as I didn't see any 94XX buses. |

Yeah, I'm trying to put together a roster:1996: 9656?-9672 1997: 9713?-9725? 2001: 0101-0112? 2003: 0319?-0333? EZ Riders: 0556-0557 Usually, the last 2 numbers of the fleet number are unique (so that they can just refer to them by the last 2 numbers), but if my numbering is correct, there is an overlap between the 96 New Flyers and the ElDorados, so chances are my numbers are wrong. The apparently-inactive 1993 D40LFs are 3775-3789. The Flxibles were numbered in the 4300 and 3700 series, not sure which ones are left. |

Strange how 0556/0557 overlap with the 9600s. There were plenty of other open numbers available (they could've numbered them 0546,0547 for example). Maybe MTD is getting away from the unique last 2 numbers thing. |
